On the Invocation of the Name of Jesus
By: Lev Gillet, A monk of the Eastern Church

The invocation of the Name of Jesus is a way of prayer perhaps more familiar to Christians of the East than the West.  In the Orthodox Church it is known under the name of the 'Jesus Prayer' and it is widely practiced.  The invocation of the Holy Name, however, has also been used by many generations of Catholics.  It was propagated by saints like Bernard of Clairvaux (12th century) and Blessed John of Vercelli, (13th Century), and Bernadine of Siena (14th century).   This short work has a purely practical character.  It has been written with the hope of giving a little help to Christians who desire to grow ever closer to Jesus through this very special devotion.

The Invocation of the Name of Jesus
By: Rama Coomaraswamy

The method of prayer known as Hesychast or the Prayer of Jesus, as practiced in the Eastern Orthodox Church, has in the past few years become a central focus of Western Catholics who are interested in devotional or contemplative practices.  This anthology of writings from the Fathers of the Roman Church, shows that the invocation of the Holy Name extends throughout the history of Catholicism, especially as "individual prayer " which "has as its aim. the purification of the soul" and "has the virtue (strength) of re-establishing equilibrium and restoring peace, in a word, of opening us up to grace."  This book contains thirteen short chapters, each devoted to a giant of the Christian Church, Saint Bernadine of Siena, St. Bonaventure, and St. Thomas Aquinas and many more saints teach us the power in the most Holy Name of Jesus.  Each work gives insight into the deep spiritual growth available to those who develop a devotion to the 'name above all names'.
